Cairo women-only café keeps smokers at bay

By Salwa Samir
In the old days, you only saw men sitting at cafés in the street, puffing happily on their sheeshas, drinking tea or coffee, playing backgammon or simply watching TV. The women didn't dare join them. But nowadays, in the upmarket Cairo suburb of Nasr City, there's even a café for women only.

As the large sign outside reads: “No entry for men”.“It's nice to think up a new idea and actually carry it out. About 30 other women have had the same idea, but I'm the only one who's made it come true,” Marwa Ismail, 33, proudly tells the Mail.“This coffee shop was a supermarket before I started renting it six months ago. It cost me nearly LE80,000 to renovate,” adds Ismail, the owner of the place, who believes that women's rights are not protected anyway.
